The Temple Of the Tooth

The Temple Of The Tooth Relic

Located in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa[a] (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) is a Buddhist temple. It is situated within the former Kingdom of Kandy's royal palace complex, which also holds the Buddha's tooth relic. Because it is thought that whoever owns the relic controls national governance, the relic has been significant to local politics since ancient times. Kings of Sinhalese historically possessed the artifact. The relic and the temple are the primary reasons the temple of the tooth is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Bhikkhus of the two particular chapters, the Malwathu chapters and Asgiri chapters, conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple. The inner chamber of the temple is the daily venue for worship for Bhikkhus belonging to two specific chapters: the Asgiri and Malwathu chapters. Three times a day, at dawn, noon, and night, rituals are carried out. Nanumura Mangallaya, a herbal mixture created from fragrant flowers and scented water, is used to symbolically bathe the relic on Wednesdays. The holy water is said to have healing properties and is given to those in attendance.
