The militant group Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) assaulted the temple in 1989 with the goal of seizing the relic.
Additionally, the front side of the royal palace was destroyed in 1998 by an attack carried out by the militant group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).The temple was damaged by bombs detonated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1998 and by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in 1989. But every time, it was completely restored.
